We had a very enjoyable family day out at Birr Castle Gardens and Science Center last August. There really is something for everyone!
You enter through a Courtyard where can have something to eat in the Courtyard Cafe. There is seating both indoors and outdoors and the food is fresh and seasonal. You can buy your tickets online or at the Reception in the Courtyard. The Reception area also has a Gift Shop. The staff are very helpful and friendly.
From the Reception Area you can visit the Science Center which was very interesting, the center is interactive and you can learn all about Early Photography, Astronomy and the world famous Great Telescope, there is also lots of information about the Parsons Family. They say that the Science Center is the Silicon Valley of 150 years ago!
From the Science Centre you can follow the trails through the Gardens, you can get a very handy map of the trails from Reception. By following the trails you’ll see beautiful plants and flowers, rivers and the Great Telescope.
An astrophysics observation facility is being built by I-Lofar at Birr Castle and it will link Ireland to the International LOFAR Telescope, very cool!
You can finish your walk at the fabulous Treehouse Adventure Area, which the children will thoroughly enjoy and it is home to Ireland’s largest treehouse. There are plenty of picnic areas and also a sweetshop where you can buy sweets, ice-cream and tea & coffee.
When we were leaving we treated ourselves to some delicious whipped ice cream from the half door in the Courtyard, a great day out with something for everyone!
Note: There is no parking at Birr Castle itself, there is a public car park across from the Castle which is pay and display, it can get very busy and we couldn’t get space so we ended up parking in the village and walking the short distance back to the Castle.
